Around the year 1200, Ghar Chödingpa founded the monastery at the beautiful Zaqu Valley since which this monastery produced some of the greatest masters and yogis of Kham Nangchen. Ghar monastery is divided into two: Upper Gar Monastery which is built on a tip of rocky mountain hill and the Lower Ghar Monastery is located at the foot of the mountain. It takes about half an hour’s walk from the lower monastery to the upper temple.

Ghar Monastery is located at one of the most beautiful scenic locations of Kham Nangchen surrounded by mountains, verdant forests and inhabited by many kinds of birds and wildlife. One of the most beautiful and amazing sight is that the blue sheep, monkeys and other animals are often seen roaming freely around the monastery without fear of human existence.

The monastery provides simple accommodation for the visitors but in summer, having a local guide and tents, you can stay anywhere around the monastery. Ghar Monastery is a perfect place for nature lovers, photographers and spiritual peace seekers. Kham Voyage has organized several tours to Ghar Monastery and considers this place as a Hidden Gem in one of the most beautiful natural environments of Kham Nangchen.
